Title | Mitchell, George Hoole: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Principal Geologist, H.M. Geological Survey. Distinguished for researches chiefly among Palaeozoic Rocks. In the South Staffordshire (Cannock), Warwickshire, South Derbyshire and Leicestershire coalfields, his ecological mapping and subsurface studies have produced new data for calibrating successions of coals and thus materially have assisted coal-exploration beneath newer rocks in adjacent regions. Extensive outcrops of carboniferous rocks have been mapped and newly interpreted in Yorkshire. In the Ordovician, has mapped and described much new detail of succession in three areas of the Borrowdale Volcanic Series and has produced evidence of the unconformable base of the Coniston Limestone. Discovered reef-limestones in the Permian near Doncaster and contributed to knowledge of the Pleistocene history of the Lake District. A list of publications is appended. |
