A spectroscopist distinguished for his wide theoretical knowledge and for the great refinement of has experimental work. His interest has extended from the field of continuous spectra to that of the minutest hyperfine structure. In the latter he has added materially to our knowledge of the nuclei of hydrogen, leium, sodium, silver and many other atoms. He has made such advances in the techniques of the single and double Fabry-Perat interferometer that his experimental work is unsurpassed anywhere. His judgement in the selection of important researches is of the highest order. |
