Title | Williams, Carrington Bonsor: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for studies in pure and applied entomology, particularly for his work on insect migration and on natural populations. He is the leading authority on the migration of Lepidoptera. As the result of prolonged and ingenious studies on populations of Lepidoptera he has shown that in Britain it is possible to predict the numbers of these insects at any one time from the records of temperature and rain-fall during the preceding three months. He has proved that the numbers of different species appearing in a sample collection follow a logarithmic series and that the same law will describe numerical findings in nature of many different sorts. His work is highly original and he is intensely active in research at the present time. |
