Title | Bates, Sir David Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to theoretical atomic physics and its application to the interpretation of phenomena occurring in the earth's atmosphere, in electric discharges and in interstellar space. He has provided the explanation in terms of dissociative recombination, of the recent microwave experiments on the decay of discharge afterglows. The technique for systematizing the calculation of atomic transition probabilities which he introduced has enabled him to provide tables from which these quantities may be obtained, for astrophysical application both accurately and conveniently. He has made important contributions to the theory of photoelectric absorption by gases, of the properties of negative ions and of atomic collision phenomena. His work on the nature and origin of the ionospheric layers, the airglow and the aurora has accorded him world wide recognition as a leading authority on upper atmospheric physics. |
