Title | Devons, Samuel: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the artificial disintegration of light nuclei. First to show interference between two nuclear states, by studying the emission of gamma rays which follows the capture of protons by lithium. Contributed much of our knowledge of the complicated processes which follow the impact of a proton on a fluorine nucleus; measured the extremely short lifetime and other properties of the first excited state of the oxygen nucleus. Studied experimentally and theoretically the angular distribution of gamma radiation from light nuclei; author of Excited States of Nuclei (Camb. Univ. Press, 1949). List of published papers attached. |
