Title | Ogston, Alexander George: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished especially for studies in physicochemical methods applied to the investigation of macromolecular substances and for theoretical contributions in enzyme biochemistry; in particular he has defined the condition and configuration of hyaluronic acid in synovial fluid and has so interpreted its physiological function. Together with his new technique (Gouy diffusiometer) he has improved the accuracy and interpretation of sedimentation determinations. His critical theoretical contributions to tricarboxylic acid cycle theory, now classical, have much influenced biochemical thought, as also has his work on protein structure, kinetics of mustard gas reactions and dissociation constants of methylated xanthines.
