Citation | Allen, Norman Percy (Esher, Surrey) Superintendant, Metallurgy Division, The National Physical Laboratory
Distinguished in metallography and physical chemistry applied to industrial metallurgy. By studies of gas porosity in copper and silver he explained the "pitch" of copper ingots. Made authoritative investigations of the transformations of alloy steels and clarified their relation to the engineering properties of these steels. His researches on the nickel-chromium-titanium system played a vital part in the use of these alloys in jet engines. Directed pioneer work on uranium alloys, and investigations of brittle fracture in steel, involving preparation of exceptionally pure iron and demonstrating the possibility of important improvements by control of impurities. |
