Citation | Mendel was the first to show that a three carbon sugar, glyceraldehydes, in very low concentration, inhibits the breakdown of glucose to lactic acid in tumour cells without interfering with their respiration. He showed that this inhibition could be reversed by minute amounts of pyruvate. He has greatly extended our knowledge in the field of neurophysiology by demonstrating that there are two enzymes capable of hydrolysing acetylecholine - true cholinesterase and pseudo-cholinesterase. He has worked out the only methods, so far available, which enable us to assay the activities of these two enzymes separately and has shown that inhibitors may act either on both enzymes or selectively on one or the other. Acetylcholine released during nervous activity was shown by Mendel to be hydrolysed by true cholinesterase only. His work has stimulates a great number of other workers in this field. Statement added 28 October, 1953 (underlined):- More recently Prof. Mendel has published important studies on "ali-esterases" in which he demonstrated that substances acting as specific inhibitors of these enzymes also inhibit the growth and multiplication of cells, especially those of malignant tumours in tissue cultures. This discovery, which opens a new and very important field of research, further strengthens his claims for election. |
