Title | Ewald, Paul Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election The name given on the certificate is Peter Paul Ewald. |
Citation | Peter Paul Ewald is one of the founders of X-ray optics and structural crystallography. Laue's discovery of the diffraction of X-rays by crystals was the direct result of Ewald's analysis of the interaction of electromagnetic waves and crystals. Ewald shortly afterwards developed the concept of the reciprocal lattice and laid the foundation of X-ray optics in his book Kristalle und Rontgenstrahlen (underlined), Berlin, 1923. From that time onward he has been one of the leaders in organising and assisting the progress of crystallography as Editor of international journals and tables, and by his part in founding the International Crystallographic Union. P.P Ewald has been, and remains today, one of the greatest figures in crystallography. |
