Title | Smith, Sir James Eric: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies on the functional morphology of invertebrates, and in particular for his analysis of the behaviour of Echinoderms through a study of the structure of the nervous system. The neurology of the Echinodermata was the least known of any invertebrate group, but is now was well or better understood than any other as a result of Professor Smith's work. His application of similar methods towards a functional analysis of the nervous system of the Annelida represents a major increase of knowledge in this field, so essential for a general understanding of comparative functional neurology. The importance of behaviour in determining distribution of animals has been shown in his contributions to an understanding of marine bottom living animals. He has also fundamentally advanced knowledge of Nemertean development. |
