Citation | Distinguished for contributions to luminescence of solids, experimental optics and biophysics. The candidate developed the electron-trap theory of phosphorescence and thermoluminescence. War-work included mass spectograph separation of uranium isotopes. Has made important studies of microscopical methods and has developed a simple, efficient, spherical-mirror reflecting microscope objective now widely used in ultraviolet and infrared studies, and initiated the application of the interference microscope in biology. He is best known for his distinguished work on the molecular structure of deoxypentose nucleic acid (DNA), purified and in cells. All his work has been remarkable for outstanding elegance of technique. |
