Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Joined the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1927, and now, as Chief Geologist of that company's successor, British Petroleum Company, holds one of the most important posts among geologists in this country. Geological exploration (with J V Harrison) led him to work out the 'collapse structures' in the mountains of Persia, which have proved to be of prime importance in the development of gravity tectonics. He initiated the preparation of the Geological Map and Sections of S.W. Iran. Since 1953, succeeding G.M.Lees FRS, he has been largely responsible for the exploration for oil in the United Kingdom, work which forms the basis of much of our knowledge of the deeper structures of England. The greater part of his work, covering areas in many parts of the world, can only be found in the confidential reports of his Company. |
