Title | Macdonald, David Keith Chalmers: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his contribution to the experimental and theoretical study of thermal and electrical properties of metals over a wide range of temperatures. His experiments have revealed notable discrepancies with existing theory; his more recent investigations in thermoelectricity to very low temperatures are particularly noteworthy. In experiments on surface scattering of electrons he discovered the size effect on magneto-resistance, and gave a theoretical interpretation. He demonstrated the influence of controlled impurities on the anomalous minimum of electrical resistance at low temperatures, and showed its relationship to thermoelectric behaviour. He measured and analysed electrical "noise" in resistance, thermionic and photoelectric valves, and made theoretical studies of density and velocity fluctuations in electron streams. He has also carried out theoretical work on random processes, in part applied by other workers to ionospheric phenomena. |
