Title | Seshadri, Thiruvenkata Rajendra: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the chemistry of plant products. Leader of an active school of research in organic chemistry. His field of investigation in plant chemistry covered flavonoids and isoflavonoids including leucoanthocyanidins and quinonoid-anhydrobases, xanthones, coumarins, furan derivatives and naturally occurring quinines. A special study of lichen products has been made. Synthesis of a large number of natural products has been effected by simple methods following possible paths of biogenesis. The work included improved methods of nuclear oxidation, reduction, nuclear methylation and isomeric change. Complex flavonoids and isoflavonoids, lichen and mould products (depsides and quinines) and furan derivatives (rotenone analogues) were among the types investigated. Investigations of the biogenesis of lichen acids and Ramen Effect studies on hydrogen bond formation are amongst his other contributions. List of publications attached. |
