Citation | Distinguished for his application of chemical engineering principles to a wide variety of industrial problems. During the war Kearton was responsible for the coordination of the development work in England on the separation by diffusion of the uranium isotopes, and this work was later the foundation of the design of the Capenhurst plant of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority. After the war he initiated and directed fundamental improvements in the cellulose acetate industry; he was responsible for the building in South Africa of a dissolving pulp mill of very advanced design, and he has introduced many far-reaching improvements in the properties of acrylic synthetic fibres. He is a part-time member of the Board of the U.K. Atomic Energy Authority and is also a member of the Central Electricity Authority's Research Council. |
