Title | Maizels, Montague: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 16 March 1961 |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on ionic regulation in blood cells. He has made important contributions to our knowledge of the mechanism by which inorganic ions are stored in erythrocytes and other cells. He was among the first to demonstrate the importance of metabolic processes in maintaining ionic concentration gradients across cell membranes. He has analysed the relative roles of oxidative and glycolytic pathways in ionic transport and shown characteristic differences between nucleated and non-nucleated erythrocytes. His studies were carried out in a laboratory devoted to clinical routine duties, but the results have been of much use and interest to workers in the general field of cell permeability and ion transport. |
