Citation | Distinguished for his work in microbiology and experimental pathology. He was one of the first to relate the immunological properties of a bacterial endotoxin to those of its chemical components. He has advanced knowledge on the effect of permeability factors in inflammation and discovered and defined a new type. He discovered and defined a period in the early stages of inflammation important for subsequent invasion of tissue and refuted lymphatic blockade as a major defence mechanism. As a former Deputy Director of the National Institute for Medical Research and as the present Director of the Lister Institute he has had a large influence on the course of experimental research, and equally, as co-author of Topley & Wilson's Principles of Bacteriology and Immunity (underlined), on bacteriological training internationally.
