| Citation | Distinguished for his pioneer work on the theory of soil mechanics in relation to such works as foundations, earthen dams and stabilisation by land-slides, and for experimental studies, both in the laboratory and the field, on the behaviour clays and silts under various conditions of stress. He has established an international reputation in this new scientific approach to some of the major problems of civil engineering, and since 1957 has been President of the International Society of Soil Mechanics in Foundation Engineering. |
