Title | Burhop, Eric Henry Stoneley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished by the wide range of his contributions both in experimental and in theoretical atomic and nuclear physics. He is a leading authority on the Auger effect about which he written a monograph and several papers, and he is a joint author of a standard monograph on electronic and ionic impact phenomena. He contributed to an extensive wartime experimental research programme on discharges in strong magnetic fields and has written several theoretical papers on the same and related subjects. In recent years he has been a leading member of a European cooperative group concerned with the use of emulsion techniques for studying the properties of K-mesons including their interactions with nucleons and nuclei. This group has been one of the most effective in this field of research and is extending its scope to utilise the high energy particle beams available from the proton synchrotron at CERN. He has also carried out theoretical studies of nuclear forces and nuclear reactions. |
