Title | Callan, Harold Garnet: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on newt oocyte nuclei, and particularly on the lampbrush chromosomes of these nuclei. He showed that the lateral loops of the chromosomes occur in pairs, that the morphologies of these loops are site-specific, and that each loop has a long axis of deoxypentose nucleic acid (DNA) which is part of the long axis of a chromosome. He showed that in certain individuals homologous loops are of dissimilar morphology, and attributed these differences to the presence of different alleles. Breeding experiments confirmed this suggestion, showing that loop characters segregate and assort. Recently he has shown that each chromatid is a single DNA double helix, and that a site of a single synthetic function is a fibre a millimetre or more in length. |
