Title | Hirsch, Peter Bernhard: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Dr. Hirsch is noted for his development of the techniques of the X-ray microbeam and the electron microscope for the investigation of defects in metals. He was the first to observe and photograph dislocations in thin metal films by transmission electron microscopy and to observe them in motion. As a result of extensive investigation by himself and his co-workers he has been able to make major advances in the theory of the mechanical properties of solids. He has also made important contributions to our understanding of the structure of coal. |
