Title | Eley, Daniel Douglas: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Professor D.D. Eley has made investigations of various exchange reactions on metal films and on alloys. He was one of the first to employ metal films. He has demonstrated the covalent nature of chemiospheric bonds (Ely-Stevenson equation) and has revealed quantitatively the role of d-electron levels in catalysis. He has discussed the semi-conductive properties of phthalocyanines and other organic solids and has shown that the activation energy for semi-conduction arises in the pi-electrons. This work has been extended to proteins. He has studies the ionic polymerisation of the vinyl ethers with a wide range of catalysts, and has also applied the monolayer technique to lipo-protein interactions. |
