Citation | Has made contributions of outstanding importance to many modern developments in theoretical astronomy (underlined) and allied subjects, especially to problems of cosmic ray theory, cosmical magnetism, the nature of the lunar surface, cosmology, relativistic electro-dynamics, the causes of nutation, interstellar polarisation of light, and the interior and evolution of the Earth. In all these fields he has justly attained international reputation, and is widely regarded as one of the most stimulating and active scientists produced by this country in recent years. Gold has also recently been much to the fore in promoting the development of suitable equipment for the study of astronomical problems by means of satellites and space projectiles. |
