Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to dynamical and physical meteorology. His early work in atmospheric electricity, especially in the polar regions, led to a theory if charge separation in drifting snow and an explanation of the fine-weather variations of the electrical field in terms of turbulent mixing. In 1947 he made the first direct measurements of the friction of the wind on the earth's surface, using novel apparatus. More recently, he has carried out an intimate study of air flow over the ocean, resulting in a radical revision of the concept of the planetary boundary layer and with it, a major contribution to the theory of the general circulation of the atmosphere by the development of a coherent picture of the transfer of angular momentum. |
