Citation | Distinguished as a histologist and cytologist. He developed important methods for the microscopic localization of substances within cells, especially the coating technique of radioautography. With these methods he and his colleagues measured the rate of cell renewal in intestinal, gastric and seminiferous epithelium, and determined the time sequence of the lymphocytic series in the thymus. He did pioneer work on the uptake of radioiodine by the thyroid gland: later he observed the synthesis of thyroglobulin in thyroid cells and its iodination in the colloid; detected a substance in thyroid and blood which others found to be a second thyroid hormone; and showed that thyroid tumours can be produced by a low-iodine diet. His analysis of the deposition of bone tissue explained how bones retain harmonious proportions while they elongate. He demonstrated the intracellular synthesis and prompt release of collagen, and showed that the cytoplasm of all cells synthesizes protein to some extent while the nucleus builds up both protein and RNA.
