Citation | Distinguished for his development and application of electron optical methods, in particular high resolution electron microscopy, to the study of the structure of solids and their surfaces. He made significant contributions to the development of reflection electron microscopy and used it to investigate the surface topography of polymer fibres and crystals. His work in this field was recognised by the Beilby Memorial Award in 1954. He later pioneered the study of high resolution electron microscopy of crystal lattices and imperfections. He resolved lattice periodicities of 10A and 12A in the phthalocyanines and of 6.9A in molybdenum trioxide and was the first to make a direct observation of dislocations in the lattice. Metal lattice spacings and dislocations were indirectly resolved using moire pattern techniques with Bassett and Pashley. These lattice resolutions methods (and those developed by Hirsch) have been used intensively over the last four years by Menter's Group to study the nucleation growth, microstructure and mechanical properties of metal and alloy evaporated films.
