Title | Hanson, Emmeline Jean: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for her work on the structure of muscles in relation to the mechanism of contraction; also for earlier studies of polychaete annelids, especially of their blood circulatory systems. In a series of papers published both alone and in collaboration with others, the candidate has provided convincing evidence that striated muscles contract sliding filament mechanism, and has shown that this probably also applies to other types of muscles. These discoveries have brought to a focus and helped to explain in a most striking way much that was already known about the behaviour of living muscles and the chemical machinery of contraction; and they represent a stimulating and substantial advance towards understanding the molecular aspects of contraction. |
