Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches into the mechanism of intestinal absorption. New techniques have been introduced which have greatly simplified the approach, and have been applied to study the transport of proteins, carbohydrates, salts and fluids, and especially the interrelations between sodium, glucose, and fluid transfer, and accompanying electrical changes. Location of the enzymes and transfer processes in the epithelial cells, to which the name "functional topography" has been given, has been and is being, studies. The stagewise transfer of amino acids, glucose, and other substances, and the specificity and energy requirements of these stages has been studied. The mode of action of phlorrhizin has been clarified. He has started at Sheffield a dynamic school of research. |
