Citation | Distinguished as a neurophysiologist. He contributed substantially to knowledge of the physiology and pharmacology of the neuromuscular junction. His experiments on the mammalian cerebral cortex, isolated in vivo from the rest of the nervous system, enabled him to identify two mechanisms, self-re-excitation of neuronal networks and differential repolarization, involved in the repetitive activity of cortical neurons. He showed that self-re-exciting networks are responsible also for spinal reflex after-discharge and that they form an essential part of the medullary respiratory centres. He supplied evidence for the existence of a system of neurons capable of conveying excitation from any site to any other in the unanaesthetized forbrain. |
