Title | Boyd, Robert Louis Fullarton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his experimental investigation of electrical discharges in gases and to scientific research using space vehicles. He has introduced new methods of investigation of plasma properties by probe techniques which have been very effective in both laboratory and space environments. The group under his leadership has carried out many important studies of atmospheric structure, of electron and ion compositions and temperatures in the ionosphere and of ultraviolet and X-ray emission from the sun and stars, using the Skylark rocket at Woomera. His group was also responsible for the experiments which are providing very successful observations of electron and ion temperature and composition and of solar X-ray emission from the Ariel satellite which are providing new insight into the behaviour of the upper atmosphere and into solar-terrestrial relations. |
