Title | Merrison, Alexander Walter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for work in nuclear and elementary particle physics. At A.E.R.E. Harwell he took an important part in the development and use of a new and powerful type of neutron velocity selector. At Liverpool University he has measured the rate of several important reactions between pions and nucleons. At C.E.R.N., Geneva, he was the leader of a group which showed that pions sometimes decay directly into electrons, rather than muons. This very important result, obtained after other experiments elsewhere had failed, made it possible to postulate an extremely simple and elegant universal form for the weak interactions between the particles of half-integral spin. At C.E.R.N. he has also carried out interesting experiments on the mass spectrum of particles emitted in very high energy reactions. |
