Title | Paton, Thomas Angus Lyall: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for the design and construction of large dams. Outstanding examples of his work are Owen Falls (Uganda) concrete gravity dam controlling Lake Victoria: Kariba (Rhodesia) double-curvature arch dam over 400 feet high, forming the World's largest artificial reservoir, (2000 square miles): Latiyan (Iran), 340 feet high, which will be the longest single web buttress dam in existence; and Roseires (Sudan) large buttress and earth fill dam. He was also engaged in the initial stages of High Aswan Dam (Egypt) until U.S.S.R. took over after Suez. In all these, scientific methods of design have been combined with practical skill to produce civil engineering structures of the first magnitude & importance. Paton is Chairman of the Research Committee of the Institution of Civil Engineers and of the Arch Dam Committee of the Civil Engineering Research Association. |
