Title | Marshall, Norman Bertram: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | N. B. Marshall is a leading authority on the structure, biology and classification of fishes. His work on the systematics of fishes has been mainly concentrated on deep sea forms, but he has been remarkably perceptive in showing how their specialisations throw light on the classification of fishes generally. He has been quick to exploit new methods of studying fish in their natural environment and has, for example, by analysis of large numbers of photographs of the deep sea floor, been able to confirm predictions made on the basis of his anatomical studies of the behaviour of deep sea fish, and to discover their population densities at different depths and on flooring of different types of deposits. Marshall's studies on the macroscopic and microscopic anatomy of the swimbladder have added greatly to our knowledge of this organ and have stimulated much fruitful work on its physiology and function. Because of his wide knowledge and experience he is the authority to whom scientists in other disciplines naturally turn for advice on all aspects of the biology, structure and classification of fish. |
