TitleBacon, Francis Thomas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in the invention of the "bacon fuel cell". During several decades Bacon sustained as vision of reverse electrolysis as a means of generating power and his sound intuition led him to concentrate single-mindedly on the potentialities of the H-2 - O-2 cell. He developed techniques for operating this cell at elevated temperatures and pressures, for using graded porous nickel electrodes and for controlling the rate of removal of water. His very substantial achievement was the production not merely of a workable cell but of a fully engineered and automatically controlled battery producing 5 KW whose principles of construction were subsequently adopted, with only slight modification, in the battery used in the Apollo spacecraft.
