Title | Polani, Paul Emanuel: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for contributions to knowledge of chromosomal abnormalities responsible in man for anomalies of sex, such as the syndromes of Turner and of Klinefelter, and for Down's syndrome (mongolism). His early work on coarctation of the aorta and colour-blindness led to conclusions about the number of X chromosomes possessed by patients with Turner's and Klinefelter's syndromes which were immediately confirmed when technical advances made possible the visual identification of the human X and Y. His work on Down's syndrome led to the recognition of chromosome translocation as the cause of an important inherited type of the condition. Much of the knowledge gained in this country from the application of cytogenic studies to abnormalities of sex has resulted from Polani's imaginative use of his vast clinical resources. A list of 60 papers is appended.
