Title | Rowson, Lionel Edward Aston: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to agriculture and reproductive physiology of farm animals and especially to the study of animal breeding, artificial insemination and embryo transfer. Rowson is internationally acknowledged as one of the pioneers in the field of application of artificial insemination and embryo transplantation to the breeding of large farm animals, particularly cattle. His methods have also given excellent result in sheep. He has shown, for example, that fertilized sheep ova can be inserted into the reproductive tract of rabbits in Cambridge and the inovulated rabbits flown to South Africa where the sheep embryos can be transferred to a recipient ewe of a different breed, with pregnancy following normally. Shipments of fertilized eggs of farm animals are likely to become, in the future, a useful method for improving native breeding stock, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Quite recently, he developed also a new method of inducing twin calving by artificial inovulation. Rowson has also made a number of outstanding contributions to the knowledge of basic reproductive physiology in farm animals, particularly as regards sperm survival, hormonal aspects of uterine infection and control of pregnancy. He demonstrated the existence of a clear-cut tripartite embryo-uterus-ovary association as an important factor controlling the corpus luteum maintenance and regression in sheep.
