| Title | Mitchell, Peter Dennis: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Description | Citation typed |
| Citation | Dr Mitchell's early work was mainly concerned with the relationships between surface structure, cell growth, osmotic properties and phosphate metabolism in bacterial and subcellular organelles. In 1958 he proposed the group-translocation theory of vectorial transport across membranes, and in 1961 the chemiosmotic hypothesis of oxidative phosphorylation. His novel and stimulating ideas have had a most important influence on research in the field of energy transduction. |
