Citation | Dr. Eglinton has made distinguished contributions to organic chemistry in three areas, acetylene chemistry, infra-red spectroscopy and organic geochemistry. The so-called Eglinton coupling of acetylenes has been extensively used, notably in the classic Sondheimer work on the annulenes. He developed the application of infra-red spectroscopy to the detection of inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding and elaborated the technique into a widely used tool for structural elucidation. He was among the first to illustrate the potential of gas-liquid chromatography in natural product chemistry and intensively exploited its combination with mass spectrometry. He has applied these techniques to his present main theme of organic geochemistry and has played a major role in the development of this subject. For instance he has characterised, both structurally and stereochemically, many isoprenoids (acids, steroids and triterpenes) from ancient shales and sediments and is engaged on a biolipid-geolipid comparison. The Organic Chemistry Unit he has established is highly regarded internationally as evinced by his choice as the principal investigator of the Apollo programmer to study the carbon chemistry of the returned lunar samples. A list of over 150 papers and books is appended. He was recently awarded the Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. |
