| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the study of genetic recombination and the molecular mechanism of ageing. He was responsible for the development of methods for using Ustilago maydis in experimental genetics, and using this fungus, made important observations on mutation of the divided chromosome, on mitotic gene conversion and on recombinogenic effects of various mutagens and other drugs. More recently he has led important investigations on the relationships between repair of radiation damage, recombination and enzymes acting on DNA. His proposed mechanism for gene conversion and recombination, first put forward in 1964 and subsequently developed and refined, has conditioned all subsequent thinking on the subject. Its novel features - hybrid DNA formation and excision-repair of mis-matched bases - are now widely accepted. In the field of ageing, he has obtained evidence that synthesis of defective protein molecules is a feature of ageing both in fungi and in human cells, and that drugs which reduce the accuracy of macromolecular synthesis can accelerate the ageing process. |
