| Citation | After making the discovery that different breeds of cattle have electrophoretically distinguishable haemoglobins, Bangham did useful work on the electrophoretic characteristics of leucocytes and spermatozoa, and on other aspects of the cell surface such as adhesiveness and the action of anaesthetics. He then turned to a study of the physical structure of phospholipids in aqueous media, and introduced the liposome as a model for the cell membrane. This has led to important advances in our knowledge of the mechanism of penetration of membranes by ions and small molecules like water. |
