Title | Broadbent, Edward Granville: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1973 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his many outstanding contributions to more than one branch of aeronautics and fluid mechanics. He achieved an international reputation by his work in the field of aeroelasticity. He developed the classical theories into practical prediction methods suitable for application to transonic and supersonic aircraft, and these techniques are still largely applied in the aircraft industry everywhere. Broadbent then worked successively in magnetohydrodynamics, propulsion at high speeds, and on the propagation of aerodynamic noise. In each field, he has achieved a notable success: by theoretical studies of MHD wave propagation from a localised source; by developing a highly-original and powerful method for designing propulsive flow fields with heat addition; and by devising successful means for reducing engine noise by the shielding effect of the airframe, which are of far-reaching practical importance. A list of 67 papers is appended. |
