Citation | Wells has made great contribution to the development of resistance to brittle fracture in welded steel structures. First, by the development of wide plate test facilities and their use in exploring fracture resistance of fusion welded steels. Second by development of a science of fracture mechanics. Since, 1961 the use of the crack opening displacement to measure fracture toughness has been pioneered and recognised internationally. Third by direct and personal application of results of his research to construction of some of the world's largest steel structures, - penstocks and turbine casings in Labrador, pipeline facilities in Alaska, office blocks in London, nuclear and chemical reactor pressure vessels in U.K., U.S.A., Japan, Australia, West Germany, France and Eastern Europe. |
