Citation | Distinguished for his experimental and theoretical work on the plasticity of metals, Dr. Basinski demonstrated the thermal origin of the instability of the plastic flow of single crystals at low temperatures. He showed for the first time that a thorough analysis of the stress required to maintain flow could lead to a direct estimate of the law of force between a dislocation and an obstacle. He has studied in a series of elegant experiments the interaction between a moving dislocation and dislocations of other glide systems, and has established important correlations between flow stress and "forest" dislocation densities. He has collaborated with J.W. Christian in studies of lattice transformations, and on pioneering experiments on the flow of stress of b.c.c. metals at low temperatures, which provided evidence for the lattice friction stress in these metals. His calculations with M.S. Duesbury revealed an unexpected complexity in the structure of a dislocation in a body-centred cubic crystal. His recent work on solution hardening has also led to new results which are likely to deepen our understanding of the subject. |
