Title | Shercliff, John Arthur: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1977 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in magnetohydrodynamics (mhd) and in particular for his pioneering analytical and experimental studies of mhd duct flows and electromagnetic flowometers. Shercliff's two books, "The Theory of Electromagnetic Flowmeters" and "A Textbook of Magnetohydrodynamics", established him as an international authority in the new field of magnetohydrodynamics in the early sixties. Shercliff has also ranged widely in fluid mechanics. His published work includes papers on generalized gas dynamics, magnetogasdynamics, seepage flows and rotational flows. His most recent book on vector fields shows the breadth of his understanding in fluid mechanics and electromagnetism and illustrates the ease with which he spans the two fields of applied mathematics and engineering science. Shercliff's early work) particularly that on mhd duct flows and flowometers) has found application in many engineering situations. His more recent work has been mainly on problems of mhd under rotational forces arising in various technological applications. |
