| Citation | Dr Franklin's early work on coke research, the application of statistics and the theory of separation processes led to numerous high quality publications, a book "Statistical Analysis in Chemistry and the Chemical Industry" and major contributions to the Series "Chemical Engineering Practise". Then, in 1955, he joined the Atomic Energy Authority and rose rapidly to the position of Chief Executive of British Nuclear Fuels Limited. In this position his opportunity for further scientific research was negligible but he continued to apply his analytical powers to a technological business which us probably uniquely difficult and complex. There is no way of managing BNFL without an intimate understanding of diffusion plant, centrifuge plant, fuel fabrication plant and, above all else, the reprocessing plant at Windscale. Franklin did this so well that he guided the company from a modest national undertaking to a successful international enterprise of immense importance to this country and the world. More recently he has accepted a request from the Minister to take charge of the disoriented reactor construction industry in this country, and he brings to that crucial task the same combination of abilities which were successful in BNFL. He is the outstanding man in the nuclear industry of the UK, and much depends on him. |
