| Citation | Ganellin directed the chemical research for the discovery of the H2-receptor histamine antagonist class of drugs, collaborating with Sir James Black to characterise a second type of pharmacological histamine receptor and inventing the drug cimetidine which completely changed the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and revitalised histamine research. He introduced highly selective histamine agonists as pharmacological tools, and identified compounds as chemical controls in histamine pharmacology. By making these compounds freely available to pharmacologists throughout the world for the past decade, he has transformed pharmacological research into histamine. He has made an outstanding contribution to the practice of medicinal chemistry in applying physical-organic chemistry to structure-activity analysis. |
