TitleBagshawe, Kenneth Dawson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1986
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHe had been distinguished for his contribution to the study of trophoblastic tumours, and was responsible for the first successful treatment for this type of tumour at the international level. The combined treatment of choriocarcinoma with methotrexate and 6-mercaptopurine remains the most successful and highly effective treatment available. He developed the first successful method of monitoring the progress of treatment by measurement of human chorionic gonadotrophin, first by bioassay and later by radioimmunoassay, which he developed himself in collaboration with his colleagues. This has had wide implications for following up treatment in other tumours. He had therefore made an original and very important contribution in the diagnosis and treatment of what was previously often a fatal condition.
