Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to ab initio quantum chemistry, and particularly for his development of methods to treat the electron correlation problem. Apart from his early work with S. F. Boys on trans-correlated wave functions, Handy has concentrated on molecular-orbital/configuration-interaction variational methods. His program lead to the first "million CI" calculation performed with H.F. Schaefer at Berkeley, on ethylene. Handy carried out the first full CI calculations, within a restricted basis set, for small molecules such as BH and H2O, and has also been in the forefront of the development and implementation of gradient methods. In 1975, Handy developed the first satisfactory variational method for finding the vibration-rotation energy levels for a triatomic molecule, given the potential energy surface; he has also developed semi-classical methods for the determination of vibrational energy levels. He was Lennard-Jones Lecturer in 1984. |
