Title | Launder, Brian Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 16/07/1990 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Launder has been a pioneer of the mathematical modelling of turbulence. Not only has his work been used by numerous other researchers into turbulent flow phenomena but it has also provided the basis for many engineering computer codes, for example some of the more advanced codes used by Rolls Royce. In the U.S.A., Japan and Europe his seminal paper with Rodi and Reece is highly regarded and is the essential criterion against which any new method is judged. He has successfully extended his methods over several years to allow for new effects, such as buoyancy forces and heat transfer, and has also, with others, showed when simpler methods might be used in preference to the full equations of his model. Internationally, he is pre-eminent in the field of turbulence modelling for engineering putposes.
He leads a vigourous group at Manchester as well as heading the department of Mechanical Engineering there and plays a major role in the advancement of engineering research and education. |
