Title | Harborne, Jeffrey Barry: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1993 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Jeffrey Harborne was virtually the first pioneer chemical-ecologist in the U.K. It was a new discipline (which until then, had attracted little or no interest here), when he began work on the flavanoids, and showed the evolutionary and systematic significance of these pigments and their relationship to insect and bird pollinators. It opened up a new field. Jeffrey Harborne has also played an exceedingly important role in stimulating interest and enterprise in the study of plant/insect relationships and has demonstrated the critical part chemistry can play in resolving many of the problems involved. His research is imaginative, yet his results are presented soberly and are completely reliable. Jeffrey Harborne's enormous knowledge of the botanical and chemical interface is passed on with enthusiasm to students. His text book is invaluable, (now in a 4th edition). |
